What should you consider when buying a
convector heater?

When buying a convector heater, several technical and room-related factors play a role. In addition to the right power level, mounting options and the type of temperature control are also crucial. Depending on the usage situation—temporary or permanent—TECHNOTHERM offers suitable solutions for a wide range of requirements.

The right output for your room

The heating output should be matched to the room size. As a guideline, around 60–100 watts per square metre is recommended. For smaller rooms, units with 1,000 W are sufficient, while larger living areas typically require 1,500–2,000 W. Correct sizing not only ensures the desired warmth, but also increases energy efficiency.

Wall-mounted or freestanding unit?

The choice between wall-mounted and freestanding units depends on structural conditions and how they will be used. Permanently installed models are ideal for rooms heated on an ongoing basis, while mobile freestanding units offer flexibility—e.g. for the home office, holiday homes or temporary heating needs. Both variants are easy to install and quick to put into operation.

Thermostat and temperature control

The choice between wall-mounted and freestanding units depends on structural conditions and how they will be used. Permanently installed models are ideal for rooms heated on an ongoing basis, while mobile freestanding units offer flexibility—e.g. for the home office, holiday homes or temporary heating needs. Both variants are easy to install and quick to put into operation.

Why a convector heater?

Convector heaters are an efficient solution for fast heat at the touch of a button. They are ideal as supplementary heating, can be used flexibly and stand out for maintenance-free operation. Thanks to modern thermostat control and easy installation, they offer a high level of comfort—wherever heat is needed at short notice.

How does a convector heater work?

Convector heaters use the physical principle of convection: cold air is drawn in at the lower part of the unit, heated by a heating element and rises upward. This creates continuous air circulation that warms the room quickly—without long lead times or complex technology.

Convection: heating and circulating air

The heating element inside the convector heats the air flowing through it. The warm air rises, slowly cools in the room and then sinks back down—the cycle starts again. This natural circulation enables even heat distribution in the room without mechanical components—efficient, reliable and maintenance-free.

Heating without a fan

Fanless convector heaters operate completely silently because no moving fan parts are installed. They are ideal for bedrooms, living areas or offices where a quiet environment is desired. Thanks to convection heat, warming is fast and even—without drafts or noise.

Frequently asked questions about our convector heaters

Convector heaters are not inherently power guzzlers—their consumption depends heavily on operating time and room size. When used in a targeted and time-limited way, for example as supplementary or transitional heating, costs can be kept under control. Modern thermostats and timer functions also help ensure efficient operation.

Convector heaters provide fast heat at the touch of a button, are ready for use immediately and are easy to install. They only require a power connection and are ideal for temporary use or rooms with spot heating needs. They also operate maintenance-free and allow flexible placement—either permanently wall-mounted or mobile with feet.

Electricity consumption depends on the unit’s output and how long it is used. A 1,000 W unit operated for two hours a day uses around 2 kWh per day—at an electricity price of 30 ct/kWh, that is about €18 per month. Actual consumption varies depending on insulation, room size and the set temperature.

Convector heaters warm the room air via air circulation; infrared heaters use radiant heat and warm surfaces and people directly. Infrared is particularly suitable for targeted warmth in occupied zones, while convectors are more effective for even room heating. Which solution is better depends on the application and the spatial conditions.

No—convector heaters also work without a fan. Air circulation occurs through natural convection. Fanless units are particularly quiet and low-maintenance, as there are no moving parts that could wear out. They are ideal for quiet living areas, bedrooms or offices.
As supplementary heating, a convector heater can be useful in the bathroom—for example, for quick warmth before showering. It is important to choose a model with sufficient splash protection (e.g. protection rating IP24) and to comply with the installation requirements. For permanent heating in damp rooms, a primary heating system designed specifically for that purpose is recommended.
The required heating output depends on room size, insulation standard and use. A rule of thumb is approx. 60–100 W per square metre. For a 20 m² room, a unit with approx. 1,500–2,000 W is therefore recommended. In well-insulated rooms, a lower wattage may be sufficient; in older buildings or with high ceilings, more output is needed.
