Why an Infrared Heater?

TECHNOTHERM infrared heaters operate with direct radiant heat – similar to sun rays. The energy is not released into the air but directly to surfaces and people in the room. This creates a particularly comfortable feeling of warmth with high energy efficiency. The devices react quickly, can be installed flexibly, and operate almost without loss – unlike conventional convection heaters, which primarily heat air.

How does an infrared heater work?

Infrared heaters convert electrical energy into long-wave infrared radiation. This is emitted directly to solid objects in the room – such as walls, furniture, or people – and not primarily to the air. The surfaces store the heat and release it evenly. The result: a pleasant, constant indoor climate with high energy efficiency and no air circulation.

Radiant Heat Instead of Air Circulation

Unlike convection heaters, which primarily heat air, infrared heaters generate radiant heat. This penetrates the room air almost without loss and is only converted into perceptible heat when it strikes surfaces. This ensures uniform heat distribution without dust circulation or dry air – ideal for living and working spaces.

Heat Distribution in the Room

The radiated energy heats all surfaces in the room – floor, walls, ceiling, and objects – which then secondarily act as heat accumulators. This creates a uniform heat balance, even with open doors or slight drafts. Temperature differences between floor and ceiling are reduced, which increases perceived comfort and optimizes energy use.

No, with proper design and use, an infrared heater is by no means a power guzzler. It converts almost 100% of the absorbed energy into usable heat. Through targeted placement, timed use, and modern thermostat control, energy consumption can be efficiently managed. Especially in well-insulated rooms or in conjunction with PV power, it operates extremely economically.

Criticism of infrared heaters is often based on outdated assumptions or insufficient planning. If an infrared heater is incorrectly sized, unfavorably placed, or used permanently in poorly insulated buildings, this can lead to higher power consumption. However, with proper design – adapted to room size, insulation standard, and use – the infrared heater offers many advantages: direct heat without warm-up time, maintenance-free operation, and high system efficiency. In combination with PV systems or dynamic electricity tariffs, it is a future-oriented solution for modern buildings.
Infrared heaters emit heat punctually as radiation – therefore, they require an unobstructed line of sight to the surfaces to be heated. In heavily furnished or convoluted rooms, this can affect heat distribution. In addition, heating comfort is highly dependent on correct positioning and power selection. Compared to storage heaters, they do not store heat for longer periods but act directly during operation.
An infrared heater is particularly worthwhile in well-insulated buildings with low heating requirements or for intermittent use – for example, in holiday homes, offices, or guest rooms. It is also ideally suited for zone heating of individual rooms in existing buildings or as peak load coverage in combination with a small heat pump. When combined with PV systems or intelligent controls, energy use can be further optimized.
The acquisition costs for infrared heaters for 100 sqm of living space are – depending on room structure and design – between 3,000 and 6,000 Euros. In addition, there are electricity costs, which can amount to approx. 1,500 to 2,500 kWh annually with good insulation. Operating costs largely depend on the building condition and the electricity tariff. Maintenance or follow-up costs are largely eliminated.

The “best” infrared heater depends on the application: For bathrooms, special models with towel rails are ideal; for living rooms, design or glass variants are suitable.
