Comparing electric heaters
to other heating systems

Compared to fossil fuel heating systems such as gas or oil, as well as more complex systems like heat pumps, electric heaters offer many practical advantages: they are maintenance-free, have much lower investment costs, can be installed flexibly, and produce no local emissions. They are an economically and ecologically sensible alternative, particularly for renovations, partial modernizations, or in combination with PV systems.

What should you look for when choosing an electric heater?

Several factors are decisive when choosing an electric heater – including the correct heating capacity, structural conditions, the type of heat dissipation, and control options. TECHNOTHERM offers systems for every application – from full surface storage solutions to flexible supplementary heaters. The right combination of device, performance, and control ensures efficient operation and optimal comfort.

Performance and suitable heating power

The heating capacity should be matched to the room size, insulation standard, and usage. A guideline is approx. 40–100 W per m² of heated area. In well-insulated new builds, a lower capacity is often sufficient, while unrenovated old buildings require more heating power. Precise sizing is crucial for efficiency and comfort.

Mounting types (wall-mounted, floor-standing)

TECHNOTHERM offers devices for wall mounting or as floor-standing variants with feet. Wall mounting saves space and is ideal for permanent solutions, e.g., under windows. Floor models offer more flexibility, especially for temporary use or rental apartments. The choice depends on the room concept and usage.

Storage capacity & heat dissipation

Surface storage heaters with a fireclay core store heat and release it evenly. This reduces power consumption and ensures constant room temperatures. Direct heaters, on the other hand, react faster but without a storage effect. Depending on the duration of use and comfort requirements, the storage type is a decisive factor.

Smart heating systems for more efficiency and comfort

Digital thermostats, timer programs, or app control allow for targeted heat dissipation. Intelligent control systems reduce unnecessary energy use and increase comfort. Systems with smart home connectivity or PV integration additionally optimize self-consumption and lower operating costs in the long term.

Which buildings are electric heaters suitable for?

Electric heaters are versatile – both as a main system in new builds and for supplementing or retrofitting existing buildings. They offer high flexibility, low investment costs, and can be installed quickly without major structural effort. Thanks to modern controls and a wide variety of models, they are ideal for individual room situations and energy-efficient use.

Electric heating in the house

In single and two-family houses, electric heaters are suitable as a central or zone-based heating solution. Particularly in combination with photovoltaics, efficient and independent heating solutions are created. Whether it is a new build or an energy-efficiently renovated old building – electric heating systems can be planned flexibly and implemented quickly.

Electric heating in the apartment

In apartments or condominiums, electric heating scores with easy installation, silent operation, and maintenance-free technology. Ideal for owners who want to heat independently of central systems. It also provides targeted, demand-based heat as a supplementary solution in rarely used rooms, home offices, or bathrooms.

Ideal for renovations, supplementary heating & refurbishments

For modernizations or room renovations, electric heating provides a fast and cost-efficient solution – without interfering with the existing building services. Electric heating systems are also an ideal retrofitting solution in holiday properties, garden houses, or basements when other systems are not economically or technically feasible.

Frequently asked questions about our electric heaters & systems

Surface storage heaters with a fireclay core are considered particularly economical, as they release heat evenly and over a longer period. The stored heat reduces the switching cycles and thus the power consumption. In combination with intelligent control, timer programs, and demand-based use, energy consumption can be further optimized. Operation becomes particularly efficient in well-insulated rooms or in connection with a photovoltaic system.

Monthly costs depend on room size, insulation standard, heating duration, and electricity tariff. With a typical consumption of 60–120 kWh per m² of living space per year, monthly costs of about 30–90 euros result for an average apartment, depending on the electricity price. Operating costs can be noticeably reduced through targeted control, smart thermostats, and favorable electricity tariffs (e.g., heating electricity).
Yes – especially in well-insulated buildings, for partial use, or as supplementary heating. Electric heating is locally emission-free, maintenance-free, and cost-efficient to purchase. If electricity from renewable sources is used, the heat supply is almost CO₂-neutral. The high flexibility in installation and control makes electric heaters particularly attractive for renovations and individual rooms.

The required heating capacity depends on room size, insulation standard, and usage. As a guideline:

  • New build / Efficiency house: approx. 50–70 W/m²
  • Existing building with good insulation: approx. 70–90 W/m²
  • Old building without insulation: up to 100–120 W/m²

Professional sizing ensures that the room temperature is maintained even at low outdoor temperatures – without oversized devices.

Specially certified electric heaters with a suitable protection rating (at least IPX4) are suitable for bathrooms. TECHNOTHERM offers both surface storage and infrared models with integrated towel rails. They are suitable for damp rooms, safe to operate, and provide fast, targeted heat – especially during transitional periods or when central heating is lacking.

The future is electric – TECHNOTHERM makes it warm.
